Overview

The field of sports is not just limited to athletes and coaches. With a degree in Sports Management, graduates are prepared to handle the management of players, teams, facilities, and events and to deal with the marketing and advertising of sports and products related to sports such as athletic wear and energy drinks. In addition, students in Sport Management can work in finance, leadership training, and even social change. Therefore, Sports Management program at Wilkes University offers a wide range of classes including Introduction to Sport Management, Sport Marketing, Sport Law, Facility Management, Sport Psychology, and Sport Finance and Economics that will provide students with a solid, systematic understanding and prepare students with practical experience to enable them to transition into their future careers. Wilkes' students learn through active engagement with faculty members, academic advisors, and alumni mentors, dynamic internships, involvement in cross-campus student-run organizations, and other outstanding professional development activities. Students in the Sports Management major are required to complete an internal internship with a Wilkes University entity such as the athletics department or the Darte Center for Performing Arts, in addition to an external internship. The internal Wilkes internship experience, coupled with small classes and strong programmatic emphasis on mentoring, should give Wilkes students an edge in competing for internships with potential employers. Sports management is an exciting field to work in since it offers a wide range of career options and paths. It can be very lucrative and rewarding, but it requires appropriate preparations. It is an industry with a bright employment outlook and one that a willingness to work hard can lead to bigger and better opportunities. With a degree in Sports Management, students will be led to a successful career in the sports industry.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
