Overview

Influence the young minds of tomorrow and create the foundation for their success. A major in early childhood education can lead students to a meaningful and fulfilling career working with young children. In this program, students will discover how young children learn and develop through a sequence of relevant courses and hands-on field experiences. If students are passionate about working with children and want to help guide and nurture them in some of the most formative years of their lives, this major may be right for them. At UNI, they make sure students are ready to jump into their career by giving them professional field experience opportunities beginning as early as their first year. Students will have plenty of opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in the classroom, including: 100 hours of field experience across three age groups (infant/toddler, preschool and K-3) before student teaching student teaching in early childhood programs throughout Cedar Falls and Waterloo (K-3 and preschool OR Birth-3 Area Education Agency programs) becoming a student volunteer or staff at the Child Development Center learning how to integrate STEM-focused activities and materials into the classroom through the Iowa Regents Center for Early Developmental Education

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
