Overview

Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s master’s in Chemical Engineering immerses students in significant global research initiatives, often involving international off-site programs. These experiences allow students to witness firsthand how technological advancements can positively impact society—ranging from enhancing the speed and accuracy of medical diagnostics, designing bioprocesses for anti-cancer drug production, to developing sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. The program offers both thesis and non-thesis options, providing personalized faculty mentorship and advising within a collaborative academic environment. Students engage in challenging chemical engineering coursework and benefit from hands-on learning experiences that are central to the WPI education. The graduate seminar series further prepares students for successful careers by focusing on professional development and connecting students with off-campus opportunities such as co-ops and positions at national laboratories. Throughout their studies, students employ active learning, teamwork, and communication skills, applying current best practices to solve complex real-world problems related to chemical production and application. They can tailor their coursework with a diverse selection of interdisciplinary and specialized classes, including courses like Kinetics and Catalysis, Chemical Reactor Design, and Fuel Cell Technology. Additionally, students present an annual seminar on their research work and have opportunities to showcase their findings at scientific conferences and through published journal articles, extending their impact beyond the classroom and preparing them for leadership in the field.
