Overview

University of Minnesota Duluth's (UMD) BS in Biology offers preparation for graduate school and a sound basis for professional training in biological and health sciences. Biology is a broad field, and students can tailor their programs to fit personal interests or career aspirations. The two subplans: genetics, cell and development, & ecology, evolution and behavior, are the two major emphases in the study and practice of biology and choice of upper division electives gives students the flexibility to further focus their degree programs. The Department of Biology encourages students to develop as active scholars and to participate in undergraduate research. The degree involves faculty from multiple departments in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering and the UM Medical School. Active learning environment Access to state-of-the–art instrumentation Focus on undergraduate teaching and research The genetics, cell and development (GCD) subplan within the Biology program prepares students for graduate school and careers in cell biology, genetics, developmental biology, physiology, immunology, biotechnology, molecular biology and microbiology. It is also designed to prepare students for application to professional schools including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine. Students in the GCD sub-plan will choose at least 3 CELL electives exploring the structure and function of cells. Students will also incorporate courses from other elective categories to tailor their degrees to meet their goals. Acquired Skills Comprehension - Students will know and be able to explain the basic definitions and core concepts in their respective field of study. Application - Students will be able to apply biology knowledge and techniques towards solutions to problems. Analysis - Students will be able to determine an appropriate method for research, collect data and carry out the research using techniques and equipment specific to their field. Communication - Students will be able to write about scientific ideas and present their ideas and findings to technical and non-technical audiences. Career Possibilities Biologists with a Bachelor’s degree often do laboratory or field-based work directly related to their undergraduate training. For example: Work in an academic or private industry research lab. OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.

About the Institution

On April 2, 1895 Minnesota Governor David. M. Clough signed legislation approving the creation of the State Normal School at Duluth. Eight years later, in 1903, seven women graduated with teaching degrees. In 1921, the Normal School became the Duluth State Teacher’s College and in 1947, the Teacher's College was named the Duluth Branch of the University of Minnesota. Today, the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is a mid-sized comprehensive regional university that offers students a supportive atmosphere and access to the resources of the larger University of Minnesota system.
