Overview

Respiratory therapists, also known as respiratory care practitioners, address breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. Working in exciting and dynamic environments, their services are integral in emergency rooms, clinics, sleep labs, hospitals, home care, research, leadership, and management. Respiratory Care is a major that students complete by taking 2 years of pre-admission classes required for application to the Respiratory Care program, and then once admitted they complete the final 2+ years of their degree at the University of Kansas Medical Center Campus. Students spend their first 2 years on the Lawrence campus completing their pre-respiratory care courses. Once admitted, the remaining 2 years are spent on the University of Kansas Medical Center campus in Kansas City, KS.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
