Overview

Program Description Medical laboratory scientists perform laboratory tests used in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. These tests range from simple blood tests to more complex analyses such as those needed to uncover diseases such as AIDS, diabetes or cancer. Medical laboratory scientists can also specialize in areas such as chemistry, hematology, blood banking, immunology and microbiology. They are responsible for the accuracy of test results and the reporting of results to the pathologist or other doctors. The University of Findlay's MLS program will prepare students to enter an accredited clinical education training program. The program includes courses that are required for certification as well as the general education requirements needed for a bachelor of science degree. When completing the bachelor of science degree with a major in medical laboratory science, students are also earning a minor in biology and are only one course away from earning a minor in chemistry. As a medical laboratory scientist students can work in: hospitals, clinics, research laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, forensic science laboratories, environmental laboratories, product development, and quality assurance.
