Overview

The MA Illustration degree focuses on developing professional skills, creative practice, and industry awareness for aspiring illustrators. Students work with design professionals of international standing and gain opportunities to engage with professional and industrial contexts. The course is part of a wider postgraduate design programme that emphasizes real-world application, research skills, and an understanding of contemporary practice within the field. The programme aims to equip students with advanced skills, knowledge, and creative confidence to support their development as practicing illustrators. It fosters a collaborative and supportive environment where students work alongside artists, designers, filmmakers, musicians, and new media practitioners. Through seminars, inductions, and social activities, students become part of an active creative community, guided by experienced research staff and internationally recognised artists. The course encourages the exploration of a wide range of media, including both traditional and digital illustration, while examining the relationship between illustration, fine art, and emerging forms of visual communication. Students develop expertise in narrative storytelling, with a focus on applications in children’s and adult literature, comics, and other visual media. Alongside creative development, the programme promotes entrepreneurial thinking and commercial awareness to help students position their work professionally. Teaching is supported by staff with strong research and industry backgrounds, as well as visiting practitioners and participation in international exhibitions. The course maintains close links with industry partners, providing valuable professional exposure. The curriculum combines practice-based modules with research skills, professional practice, and entrepreneurial development. Students progressively refine their individual practice and complete a major final project, preparing them for careers in illustration both in the UK and internationally.
