Overview

The MA Digital Comics programme at the University of Hertfordshire is recognised for its strong reputation in concept art and its leading role in digital comics research and practice. The university has been at the forefront of the field for over a decade, hosting the first digital comics research symposium in 2015 and contributing to high-profile projects such as the British Library’s Comics Unmasked exhibition and the NESTA-funded Electricomics initiative with Leah and Alan Moore. Ongoing research includes work in augmented and virtual reality comics, as well as collaboration with the Fable digital comics platform. The course is designed to develop both creative and professional skills required for contemporary comics production. Students explore character and world design, visual storytelling, and the evolving possibilities of digital formats, while also gaining insight into publishing, distribution, and audience engagement. Emphasis is placed on producing work across multiple formats and contexts, enabling students to understand both digital and traditional comic practices and to manage professional workflows effectively. Teaching combines practical studio work with critical and theoretical study, encouraging students to situate their creative practice within broader media and cultural contexts. Regular guest lectures and live project opportunities provide exposure to industry professionals, while interdisciplinary collaboration with students in animation, games, and related fields supports the development of adaptable, industry-ready skills. The course also promotes self-promotion strategies, including engagement with publishers, competitions, and creative networks. Structured over three semesters, the programme begins with a series of short projects that build core skills and introduce key concepts alongside critical theory. The second semester focuses on refining professional direction, developing a portfolio or exhibition, and undertaking collaborative projects informed by industry input. The final semester is dedicated to a major self-initiated project, allowing students to produce a substantial body of work that reflects their individual creative identity and career ambitions, supported by ongoing feedback from tutors, peers, and industry contributors.
