Overview

The MA Editing and Post-Production programme at the University of Hertfordshire is distinguished by its global reputation in visual effects and production excellence, ranking 2nd in the world in this field (The Rookies, 2025). The course emphasises collaborative filmmaking, enabling students to work closely with peers from MA Film Production and related disciplines. Teaching is supported by specialist facilities, including the Walter Murch Post Production Lab, which provides access to industry-standard tools and environments. The programme is designed to develop advanced skills in picture editing, storytelling, and post-production workflows. Students gain practical experience in areas such as logging and capture, colour grading, data management, and on-set post-production processes, alongside training in assistant editor roles. The curriculum also introduces students to the broader structure of the global film industry, including its business practices, regulatory frameworks, and audience dynamics, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of professional contexts. A key strength of the course lies in its integration of industry practices and resources. Students work with professional editing systems such as Avid Media Composer, Baselight, and DaVinci Resolve, and develop asset management skills using EditShare systems. Facilities also include a 5.1 dubbing suite and extensive archival footage and sound effects libraries. The programme incorporates BAFTA albert sustainability training, equipping students with recognised certification in environmentally responsible production practices. Structured as part of a wider postgraduate film programme, the course mirrors real-world production environments by fostering collaboration across creative roles. In the first two semesters, students engage in workshops, technical training, and research into both academic and industry contexts, while contributing to production planning. The final stage focuses on a major project, supported by a dedicated mentor, allowing students to apply their skills in a professional context and prepare for careers in editing and post-production.
