Overview

The MSc Bioinformatics programme is designed for graduates in biological sciences or computer science who wish to apply computational methods to challenges in biology and medicine. The course provides an interdisciplinary foundation, combining computing, data analysis, and life sciences to equip students with the skills needed to interpret complex biological data. Students learn how to generate and process biological sequence data and apply advanced analytical tools and techniques. Teaching is delivered through lectures, workshops, and practical classes, including both computational and laboratory-based elements, with a strong emphasis on collaboration across disciplines such as biology, medicine, and computer science. The programme is delivered by research-experienced academics, with contributions from professionals working in health services, agricultural research, and organisations such as the European Bioinformatics Institute. Selected wet-laboratory practicals provide insight into the scientific processes underlying bioinformatics, enhancing students’ ability to work in interdisciplinary environments. Graduates are equipped with the knowledge and practical skills required to pursue careers as bioinformaticians across sectors including healthcare, biotechnology, and research. The full-time MSc is structured over one year and divided into three semesters. In the first semester, students develop foundational knowledge in either computer science or bioscience, depending on their background, and gain experience using bioinformatics databases and tools. The second semester introduces advanced topics such as machine learning and statistics, alongside opportunities to specialise in areas such as Clinical Bioinformatics or Bioinformatics of Plant Disease. The final semester is dedicated to an independent research project, enabling students to apply their learning in a real-world context under academic supervision. Students typically undertake around 18 hours of on-campus study per week, supplemented by independent learning and preparation. Assessment methods are varied and include practical reports, data analysis, programming tasks, presentations, group projects, oral examinations, and a research thesis. A part-time option is available over two years, with the research project completed in the second year. An alternative route with extended professional practice includes a work placement following the taught component, with the research project completed at the end of the second year; if a placement is not secured, students may continue on the standard route or transfer to the Advanced Research pathway, subject to availability.
