Overview

The MSc Bioinformatics programme is designed for graduates in biological sciences or computer science who wish to apply computational approaches to challenges in biology and medicine. The course provides a strong interdisciplinary foundation, combining elements of computing, data analysis, and life sciences to equip students with the skills needed to interpret complex biological data. Students gain experience in generating and analysing biological sequence data, as well as using advanced bioinformatics tools and techniques. Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, workshops, and practical sessions, including both computational and selected laboratory-based activities, with an emphasis on collaboration across scientific disciplines. The programme benefits from teaching delivered by research-active academics, alongside contributions from professionals working in health services, agricultural research, and organisations such as the European Bioinformatics Institute. The inclusion of wet-laboratory practicals ensures that students develop an understanding of the scientific context underpinning bioinformatics, enhancing their ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary environments. Graduates are well prepared for roles as bioinformaticians across a range of sectors, including healthcare, research, and biotechnology. The full-time course is structured over one year and divided into three semesters. In the first semester, students build foundational knowledge in either computer science or bioscience, depending on their prior background, and are introduced to key bioinformatics databases and tools. The second semester focuses on more advanced topics, including machine learning and statistics, with opportunities to specialise in areas such as Clinical Bioinformatics or Bioinformatics of Plant Disease. The final semester is dedicated to an independent research project, enabling students to apply their knowledge to real-world problems under academic supervision. Students typically engage in around 18 hours of on-campus learning per week, complemented by independent study and preparation. Assessment methods are varied and include practical reports, data analysis, programming tasks, presentations, group work, oral examinations, and a research thesis. A part-time study option is available over two years, with the research project undertaken in the second year, requiring a period of full-time commitment.
