Overview

The BSc (Hons) Counselling and Psychotherapy (Humanistic Approaches) at Derby prepares students to respond effectively to growing societal mental health needs, placing graduates at the forefront of supporting individuals through counselling and psychotherapy. The programme combines academic study, professional training, and personal development to create a transformative experience. The course provides a firm grounding in humanistic theories of counselling and psychotherapy while developing essential academic skills such as critical analysis and reflection. Professional counselling skills are honed through a 100-hour clinical placement, enabling eligibility for registration with regulatory bodies such as the BACP. Teaching is delivered by practising counsellors, psychotherapists, and experienced lecturers, with access to specialist facilities including counselling suites. The curriculum is structured around a humanistic approach and includes five pillars to ensure students meet the training, practice, and competencies required to work professionally in the field: Theory and Development, Clinical Skills & Reflective Practice, Personal Development, Professional & Ethical Development, and Research. The programme aims to provide a professional qualification leading to registration as a counsellor or psychotherapist, develop psychological understanding of interpersonal processes and learning styles, and enhance employability through clinical skills and reflective, ethical practice. It supports personal, professional, and ethical growth through critical self-awareness, encourages engagement with health and social care contexts, and promotes independent judgment, research, and innovation in counselling practice.
