Overview

The BSc (Hons) Economics and Finance with Placement Year is accredited by the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI), the largest and most widely respected professional body for the securities and investment industry in the UK. The programme is designed to build a strong professional toolkit for careers in economics and financial analysis, developing strategic decision-making skills that enhance graduate employability. Learning is enriched through access to the Financial Markets Lab, which provides practical insight into the fast-paced environment of a trading floor, alongside opportunities to complete live financial consultancy and economic research projects with real businesses. Strong employer networks ensure regular interaction with industry leaders, economics experts and senior finance professionals. With professional accreditation and significant employer input, the course equips graduates to conduct economic research and analysis, manage complex financial data sources, diagnose business and economic problems and make the strategic decisions expected of an applied economist. The curriculum covers a broad range of microeconomic and macroeconomic issues, quantitative methods, computing techniques and business performance concepts, while also developing a solid understanding of different economic systems, the impact of government policies and the performance of economies worldwide. The optional placement year enables students to apply their learning in a real-world professional environment, gaining valuable industry experience, building professional networks and enhancing their CV.
