Overview

The BA (Hons) Health and Social Care at Derby provides a pathway into a fulfilling career in health and social care, equipping students with the skills, confidence, and practical experience necessary to make a positive difference to the lives and wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities. The programme prepares students for planning and delivering health and social care services that are fit for the future, combining theoretical learning with work placements across diverse settings, including care homes and community projects. Developed in partnership with sector experts, the course remains current and relevant, supported by strong professional links, guest lectures, fact-finding visits, networking opportunities, and experienced teaching staff. Exceptional learning facilities further enhance the educational experience. Health and social care is focused on supporting people, working flexibly, creatively, and confidently to address the needs of individuals, families, and communities. The course prepares graduates for a sector undergoing rapid change, with increasing demand for versatile, adaptable, and skilled professionals. As people live longer with complex needs and more services are provided in the community and at home, the programme reflects the latest developments within the profession. The focus is on enabling and supporting vulnerable individuals to live independent, active, and healthy lives while effectively addressing the needs of their families and carers. The curriculum approaches the profession from a holistic standpoint, exploring policies and trends, social and psychological approaches, and critical issues in both adult and children’s care. Graduates are prepared to make a positive impact on service delivery in statutory, voluntary, and independent organisations, working in areas such as family support, community mental health, residential care, social housing, and refugee support. With an emphasis on multi-professional teamwork, the programme provides opportunities to collaborate with students from other disciplines, fostering the skills required for flexible, effective practice. A part-time route is also available, allowing professionals already employed in the sector to complete the qualification while continuing in their roles, supporting career progression to more senior positions.
