Overview

The English course at Derby offers an exciting and diverse academic experience that goes beyond the close analysis of literature, incorporating an exploration of the contexts in which literature is produced and consumed. Students will engage with a wide range of subjects, including the intellectual and cultural history of art, film, philosophy, linguistics, sociology, and contemporary cultural politics. This multidisciplinary approach allows students to develop a comprehensive understanding of cultural expression from various historical periods and global perspectives. In addition to academic study, there are numerous opportunities for practical learning. Students can participate in work-based learning projects, study visits to cultural and heritage institutions, and attend lectures and seminars delivered by guest speakers from diverse fields. The course also benefits from a teaching team with extensive experience in the communications industry. Tutors have worked with prominent media outlets, including the BBC, ITV News, and other broadcast organizations, ensuring students receive valuable insights from professionals who are well-connected in the field. In the first year of the degree, students are introduced to foundational media and communication skills, including writing, podcasting, and basic video production. As they progress to their second year, students have the option to specialize in areas such as public relations (PR), scriptwriting, or further develop their audio production skills. The final year provides the exciting opportunity to work on a long-term project for a media organization, allowing students to apply their learning in a real-world context. The PR modules are particularly hands-on, with the chance to join a student-run communications agency. This provides valuable practical experience, allowing students to work on real media and communication challenges for actual clients. The course is taught by a passionate and knowledgeable team with research expertise spanning a wide range of subjects in both literature and language. The teaching approach emphasizes discussion and active engagement with the material, encouraging students to think critically and push the boundaries of their learning. Additionally, substantial tutorial support is provided alongside scheduled classes, ensuring students have the guidance and resources needed to achieve their best.
