Overview

Students with a passion for Physical Education, Sport, and Physical Activity who are interested in educating others can bring a new dimension to their career aspirations through the University of Derby's BA (Hons) in Physical Education, Sport, and Physical Activity (PEPAS). The course is designed to provide a blend of engaging theoretical knowledge and industry-relevant practical skills in the field of PEPAS. Throughout the program, students will gain the essential knowledge and skills to design, deliver, and review physical education content across all school levels, in community settings, and for special populations. Practical experience is central to the course, with opportunities for school-based work placements and field trips to locations across the UK. Students can even apply for bursaries to gain international work experience, with past opportunities including placements in Fiji. Students will also benefit from access to the university’s exceptional sports centre, where they can put theory into practice. The course is taught by enthusiastic and expert staff who bring a wealth of professional experience from both the sports and educational sectors, offering valuable insights and inspiration throughout the learning journey. The BA (Hons) in Physical Education, Sport, and Physical Activity is ideal for individuals seeking careers in teaching Physical Education (PE) at both primary and secondary levels, as well as those interested in sport coaching as a form of education. The course also prepares graduates for a range of careers related to the delivery of physical activity and PE in various settings, including community-based roles with diverse audiences. It is specifically designed for those who wish to teach Physical Education, Physical Activity, and Sport (PEPAS) in community settings. The program provides a well-rounded approach to teaching, while also focusing on areas such as personal, social, and emotional skills, psychological well-being, and physical development. It is developed with input from industry-based practitioners and organizations, ensuring that students graduate with the relevant skills and knowledge employers seek. Students will gain a deep understanding not only of the techniques, content, and integration of PE within the national curriculum but also of the importance of personal development skills that enable them to "teach the learner, not the subject." Inclusion plays a significant role throughout the course, both at an organizational and societal level. Students will gain insight into the additional support needs they may encounter in various PEPAS roles, particularly focusing on special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). They will develop an understanding of neurodiversity characteristics commonly encountered in both mainstream and specialist population PEPAS delivery, ensuring they are prepared to make necessary adjustments to support all learners. Additionally, the course emphasizes the value of using the outdoors as an educational tool, offering hands-on experience in designing educational experiences within natural environments. This focus on outdoor education equips graduates with a unique skill set, setting them apart from other candidates in the job market.
