Overview

Studying Psychology and Criminology at the University of Derby offers a dynamic combination of two highly relevant and complementary fields, which enhances employability and makes graduates more versatile in the job market. This interdisciplinary approach provides students with in-depth knowledge and expertise across both psychology and criminology, opening doors to a broad range of careers. The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) for students who major in Psychology, and it includes access to specialist facilities such as the observation suite, eye-tracker equipment, and the Babylab. Students also benefit from learning from lecturers at the forefront of psychological research and have opportunities to contribute to research projects and conduct their own investigations. The program's strong links with practice – including partnerships with HM Prison Service, the Youth Justice Board, and local Police Constabularies – ensure that students gain valuable insight into real-world applications. Furthermore, there is an opportunity to achieve an additional professional qualification in youth justice, enhancing career prospects. Psychology and Criminology both offer fascinating insights into human behavior and societal issues. Students will explore topics such as mental health, wellbeing, compassion, mindfulness, autism, and more, while criminology staff conduct influential research into topics such as drug use, hate crime, human trafficking, psychopathy, and organized crime. The course emphasizes problem-based learning and encourages students to think critically, creatively, and ethically about issues in both psychology and criminology. Students will be inspired by guest lectures from world-class researchers, and they'll have the chance to engage with cutting-edge research, making this a truly transformative learning experience that prepares them for careers where they can make a real impact on society.
