Overview

The MSc Financial Investigation and Digital Intelligence is designed to support the advancement of investigative careers across both the public and private sectors. The programme develops the specialist skills required to apply modern investigative techniques in financial and digital contexts. It addresses the complex nature of crime and victimisation through evidence-based policy development, research, and the application of investigative strategy and tactics. A practitioner-focused learning platform enables students to pursue individual interests and explore selected topic areas, leading to the production of original contributions to both academic literature and professional practice. The course has been designed by practitioners for practitioners, ensuring strong alignment with real-world operational requirements. The programme maintains a consistent focus on professional investigative practice across key thematic areas. These include the study of financial and digital investigation and intelligence within the broader discipline of criminology, supported by insights from specialist fields. Students examine theoretical and conceptual approaches to investigation, alongside the practical challenges of implementation. The course encourages the development of lateral thinking and critical assessment skills to identify effective solutions using financial and digital investigative techniques. Criminality and victimisation are assessed through the analysis of financial and digital footprints created through unlawful activity. These areas provide a foundation of principles, knowledge, intellectual capability, subject-specific expertise, and transferable skills that underpin expectations for both professional practitioners and postgraduate students. The MSc is delivered to the highest standards of education within the context of practice governed by UK legislation, policy, and regulation. While many of the principles taught are applicable internationally, the programme also references recognised global standards and collaborative frameworks designed to support cross-border cooperation between public sector law enforcement agencies and private sector organisations. This course is particularly suited to graduates, professional practitioners, and investigators with interests in areas such as cybercrime, fraud, organised crime, money laundering, terrorist financing, crime scripting, victimology, and criminology. Flexible study options are available, including an 18-month full-time route delivered across three semesters (autumn and spring of year one, followed by autumn of year two) and a 36-month part-time route, allowing students to complete the programme at a pace compatible with professional and personal commitments.
