Overview

The MSc programme in Intelligence, Security, and Disaster Management at Derby provides students with both theoretical knowledge and practical application in real-life contexts. It enables evaluation of contemporary practices in areas such as risk assessment, emergency response, counterterrorism, climate adaptation, and disaster risk reduction, while developing practical solutions to complex problems. The programme equips students with the knowledge, skills, and vocational attributes necessary to pursue or enhance careers across these dynamic fields. This MSc degree has been carefully designed to deepen understanding of intelligence, security, and disaster management. It integrates insights from a wide range of disciplines, including Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Public and Environmental Health, to foster a comprehensive understanding of contemporary issues. These include violent extremism and its varied manifestations such as terrorism, radicalisation, and social disorder; security and threat vectors; disruptive events such as disasters, emergencies, pandemics, and security incidents; the causes, impacts, and management of such events; the climate crisis and its social consequences; and humanitarian assistance in evolving or unsecured territories. The programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical insights, supporting students to become accomplished professionals in intelligence, security, and disaster management or related sectors. It offers opportunities to engage with professionals from various authorities, services, and organisations in the United Kingdom and internationally. Exposure to the latest research and practice-based knowledge enables students to understand how to respond effectively to critical challenges, including natural disasters, mass casualty events, violent extremism, and climate-related threats. Engagement with governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organisations around the world complements learning about the operating environment in the UK. Strong collaborative networks, both locally and globally, provide access to guest speakers and contributors who offer insights into the practical application of programme concepts. Leading practitioners provide guidance on the skills and knowledge required to excel in careers within these fields, enhancing students’ professional preparedness. The programme is recognised by the United Kingdom National Security Secretariat and is listed on the Civil Service Platform as part of the Crisis Management Excellence Programme (CMEP). Coordinated by Cabinet Office Briefing Rooms (COBR), CMEP supports the professionalisation of crisis management within government through formal training, informal knowledge sharing, exercises, and a cross-government community of professionals.
