Overview

The MSc International Business and HRM at Derby is designed to deepen understanding of business and human resource management in an international context while providing a highly regarded master’s level qualification and essential employability skills for a successful career in business or HR. The programme develops knowledge in economics, international business, management, employment law, and HRM, preparing graduates for high-level roles. It includes networking opportunities with international business leaders and influential HR professionals through guest lectures, consultancy projects, case studies, and professional mentoring. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), providing a fast-track to a professional qualification that meets CPD requirements and enhances career prospects. Alternative pathways include MSc International Business and Finance, MSc International Business and Marketing, or MSc International Business. This MSc is highly suitable for individuals aiming for international HRM careers or working closely with talent management and training specialists in global organisations. It is ideal for students with prior business or HRM studies seeking specialist HRM skills, those with HRM experience looking to develop an international business focus, or professionals seeking a focused postgraduate degree. The programme integrates disciplines such as economics, international business and strategy, international employment law, leadership, and talent management, fostering expertise in business analysis and strategic decision-making in a global context. Applied research skills are developed through real-world case studies. The course features extensive industry partnerships. Students engage with professionals from organisations including Lloyds Bank Corporate, the Bank of England Midlands Office, HSBC Nottingham, Eversheds, Price Waterhouse Cooper, PKF Cooper Parry, Smiths of Derby, GI Insight, and Kitchencraft, with many contributing guest lectures. Leading HRM figures, including Visiting Professors Dr Linda Holbeche and Professor Lynette Harris, deliver masterclasses and lectures. Collaboration with the CIPD provides panel events and networking opportunities, while additional professional connections are fostered through Institute of Directors workshops, company taster days, and events hosted by the University’s Network of Entrepreneurs. Professional mentoring is provided by senior business and HR figures, including international trade advisors, banking specialists, and senior HR managers, offering insights and career guidance. Career development planning is an integral part of the programme, supported by personal tutors and the University’s professional career service throughout and beyond the course. The MSc supports the development of a diverse portfolio of transferable skills. Students participate in competitions such as the IBM University Business Challenge and contribute to regional specialist projects, including economic impact studies of the Buxton Festival and the Derby Low Carbon Initiative. Research may be published in the College of Business monthly Economic Bulletin or the academic journal Critical Perspectives on Business Management. The programme culminates in an Independent Study, allowing students to select a theme aligned with their career ambitions and interests in international HRM. Recent research topics include knowledge transfer in the South African hospitality sector, employee commitment in a Vietnamese technology firm, and international comparisons of trust in management. Students may also work towards the Futures Award in Leadership in International Business, recognising leadership abilities and consultancy skills through extra-curricular activities such as business consultancy work, volunteering, fundraising, and networking. Past participants have engaged with regional industry leaders, including Mel Morris, Chairman of Derby County FC and early investor in King Digital Entertainment, the company behind Candy Crush.
