Overview

The MSc International Hospitality and Tourism Management at Derby provides a comprehensive understanding of how to manage organisations within international hospitality and tourism sectors. The programme is accredited by the International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (ICE), the Institute of Hospitality (IoH), and the Tourism Management Institute (TMI). Students can choose between a traditional one-year route or an extended 21-month route, which includes a six-month integrated paid applied professional practice period, with placements available in the UK and internationally, including locations such as Dubai, the USA, and Japan. The degree integrates practical application of theory in real-world contexts and includes UN-recognised Carbon Literacy Certification as part of the curriculum. Teaching is delivered by an interdisciplinary team of internationally recognised, research-active lecturers with strong industry connections, and students benefit from individual industry mentors throughout their studies. Graduates emerge with the knowledge, understanding, and practical experience required to take on managerial roles in hospitality or tourism sectors, further enhanced through optional work placements before graduation. The hospitality and tourism industries are among the fastest-growing employment areas worldwide, requiring skilled professionals capable of leading the next generation of businesses. These sectors face new global challenges that demand adaptability, critical thinking, and the ability to measure satisfaction and performance. Graduates develop the competencies necessary to support the transition of hospitality and tourism businesses toward a global sustainable economy, applying service innovation, continuous improvement of service quality, technological advancements, and sustainable business practices. Sustainability is central to the degree, fostering an understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the role hospitality and tourism play in influencing visitor behaviour. The programme explores ways to generate social, cultural, and economic benefits for local communities while reducing environmental impacts at local, national, and international levels. Students also investigate the application of sustainable digital technologies to build resilient infrastructures, enhance global supply chains, foster innovation, and support destination development both locally and internationally. The degree offers flexible study routes, allowing students to complete the programme full-time over one year or through the extended route with a six-month integrated industry placement, providing valuable employability skills, industry experience, and professional connections.
