Overview
On completion of this programme, graduates will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to make valuable contributions to the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. They will have developed an awareness of contemporary debates influencing the sector and the theoretical considerations that inform pedagogical decision-making. Throughout their studies, they will be exposed to a range of methodologies and contexts within English language teaching, including approaches that address the needs of diverse learner groups such as children with English as an Additional Language and community-based learners. As a result, they will be confident in supporting learners in schools and community organisations to develop a sense of belonging and integration.
Graduates will receive extensive tutor and peer-led support to help them understand multilingual populations and to strengthen community ties effectively. Although the programme does not lead to Qualified Teacher Status, it prepares graduates for a wide range of professional roles within the education sector, including English language teaching overseas or within private organisations, EAL coordination in schools, lecturing in Further or Higher Education, roles within educational charities, and management or administrative careers in education.
Research-informed teaching and learning underpin the entire programme, with educational and TESOL theory, research, policy and practice forming the foundation for exploring contemporary issues and dilemmas in the field. The curriculum is rooted in global perspectives and incorporates decolonised literature, ensuring that graduates engage with a broad spectrum of international voices. Real-world assessments encourage critical reflection to support personal development and autonomy, while exposure to intercultural and diverse perspectives enhances employability. Through this process, students craft their own identity as TESOL practitioners, supported by flexible learning opportunities that promote enquiry, analysis, creativity, independent judgement and critical self-awareness.
The programme also fosters critical thinking, problem-solving and the ability to engage with sustainability challenges, preparing graduates to act as responsible global citizens. They develop the skills needed to create safe and inclusive learning environments that embrace diversity and promote social cohesion. They also gain confidence in facilitating collaborative learning and applying conflict resolution strategies.
Aligned with contemporary global priorities, the programme embeds principles of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls through inclusive pedagogical practices that celebrate diversity. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own biases and assumptions, guided by transformational education principles that support the development of equitable learning environments. The curriculum introduces new methodologies and technologies in language teaching that can be applied in varied contexts, ensuring that graduates are equipped with practical skills that support economic and educational development. They are also encouraged to deepen their understanding and critique of current English Language Teaching policies, theoretical frameworks and pedagogical strategies across local, national and international contexts.
Graduates finish the programme with knowledge of TESOL practices and an understanding of how these relate to employment in the sector. They develop the ability to construct reasoned arguments and make informed recommendations for sustainable, inclusive and effective language teaching. They learn to critically evaluate ideas and evidence, to engage confidently in academic debate and to design, deliver and evaluate TESOL curricula and learning materials. Alongside this, they gain a wide range of professional and interpersonal skills, including communication, teamwork, critical thinking and effective presentation skills.
Throughout the programme, students study a set of core modules designed to build foundational and advanced knowledge in the field. These include Language Learning: Theory and Practice; Contemporary Debates in Applied Linguistics; Research and Innovation in Education; The Principles of English Language Teaching; Curriculum Pedagogy and Materials Development in English Language Teaching; The Changing Contexts of TESOL; and an Extended Education Project, which brings the learning together through an in-depth, research-informed inquiry.
