Overview

The BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology and Practice with Foundation Year provides a significant advantage in the job market by equipping students with a recognised professional qualification and the latest industry knowledge. It is one of the UK’s longest-established courses accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), with original accreditation dating back to 1997, and has since developed a strong reputation. The programme is delivered through practical architectural design and technology projects, field trips, and guest lectures from leading professionals, and offers the opportunity to gain vital industry experience through a placement year. Extensive links with major sector names locally, nationally, and internationally enhance learning and career prospects, with 100% of graduates employed in professional or managerial roles within six months of graduation (DLHE 2016). Graduates are prepared for positions in architectural practice, consultancy, government, property development, and building contracting. Including a foundation year as part of the four-year programme allows students to strengthen skills, knowledge, and confidence before progressing to stage one of the honours degree. This is particularly beneficial for those seeking a career change or wishing to gain familiarity with new subject areas. The course is designed around the core subject knowledge requirements of the CIAT and combines live projects, advanced technical design, integrated environmental approaches, and the application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology and building simulation systems. Flexibility is a key feature, with options to study full-time with or without an industrial placement year, or part-time to accommodate other commitments.
