Overview

The BSc (Hons) Forensic Science with Foundation Year offers a dynamic four-year programme designed for students aspiring to enter the field of forensic science. This course, accredited by The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, sets high professional standards and provides an ideal entry point for those planning a career change or wishing to study a new subject area. The programme develops advanced skills required to investigate crime scenes, analyse evidence, and present findings in court, while offering hands-on experience in the University’s Forensic Training Facility and high-specification laboratories. Students benefit from instruction by forensic scientists, fingerprint experts, police officers, lawyers, and judges, gaining insight into all aspects of the profession. Opportunities for practical experience include a year-long placement in forensic imaging units, footwear units, or forensic analytical service laboratories with the East Midlands Scientific Operations Unit (EMSOU). Optional chemistry modules provide eligibility for Associate Membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry, enhancing professional credentials. Including a foundation year as part of the four-year programme allows students to strengthen skills, knowledge, and confidence with extensive support from expert staff before advancing to stage one of the honours degree. This foundation year is particularly beneficial for those pursuing a career change or seeking to gain a solid understanding of new subject areas. The continuous structure of the degree means students do not need to reapply after successfully completing the foundation year. The Forensic Science programme at Derby provides an in-depth exploration of the field, focusing on practical skills and real-world applications. Students engage with a broad range of forensic practices, from crime scene analysis to presenting evidence in a courtroom setting. Simulated crime scenes, including break-ins, assaults, road accidents, and drug and computer-related offences, are investigated, with findings presented in a refurbished courtroom and subjected to cross-examination by barristers, preparing students for professional scenarios. Advanced training includes the use of the latest biological and analytical equipment, developing expertise in fingerprint, drug, DNA, bodily fluids, and blood pattern analysis, as well as the application of entomology, anthropology, and taphonomic processes in forensic investigations.
