Overview

Mechanical Engineering graduates can look forward to excellent career prospects. The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering programme offers high-quality teaching combined with extensive practical experience, supported by an ideal location close to world-famous engineering companies. This strong industry connection helps provide a competitive edge for future careers in engineering. The programme is designed for students who may initially be uncertain about their specific area of engineering interest. The foundation year and first year of the degree cover all major aspects of engineering, enabling the development of broad multidisciplinary skills and knowledge that are highly valued by employers. In the second year, students have the option to continue on the BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering pathway or to switch to either BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering or BEng (Hons) Motorsport Engineering. The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree is professionally accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on behalf of the Engineering Council, ensuring the course meets recognised professional standards. The programme also offers the opportunity to undertake an optional placement year between stages two and three, providing valuable professional insight and practical workplace experience. Throughout the course, students develop hands-on skills in solving real-world engineering problems, take part in exciting extracurricular projects such as the IMechE Design Challenge and the British Model Flying Association Payload Challenge, and benefit from industrial visits and guest lectures delivered by leading industry professionals. Teaching is delivered by an expert academic team with substantial industrial experience across engineering disciplines. The course has received strong recognition for quality, ranking among the top courses nationally for feedback satisfaction in The Guardian University Guide 2025 and among the leading programmes for Mechanical Engineering in the Daily Mail University Guide 2026. Engineering is a wide and diverse discipline, and it is common for students to explore different specialisms before determining the most suitable pathway. Employers increasingly seek engineers with combined knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering to meet modern environmental, consumer, and business demands. Located within a technologically advanced engineering city, the university places strong emphasis on sustainability, electrification, and automation in its degree programmes. All engineering students therefore complete the same core modules during the first year, building essential foundational knowledge across all engineering disciplines while allowing time to identify preferred specialisms. At the end of the first year, students can either continue with Mechanical Engineering or transfer to Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Motorsport Engineering, depending on developing academic interests and career goals. The inclusion of a foundation year as part of the four-year study programme provides an additional academic and professional advantage. This introductory year focuses on strengthening skills, knowledge, and confidence through extensive support from experienced teaching staff before progression to the first stage of the honours degree. The foundation year is particularly beneficial for those returning to education, changing career direction, or building competence in new subject areas. All foundation year programmes are continuous, meaning that students automatically progress to the subsequent stages upon successful completion without needing to submit a separate application.
