Overview

Mental health problems affect one in four people in the UK, and those who are caring, compassionate, and have exceptional communication skills can make a real difference in the lives of individuals facing these challenges. A Mental Health Nursing degree provides the knowledge and practical experience needed to become a qualified nurse, dedicated to helping people manage their mental health and improve their well-being. The course, which starts with a Foundation Year, is ideal for students who may not have the formal qualifications required to enter directly into the honours degree programme. The Foundation Year equips students with the foundational skills and knowledge necessary for success in the full BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing degree. Upon completion of the Foundation Year, students progress to the full degree, which is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). This means graduates are eligible to register and practice as mental health nurses, provided they meet the NMC’s requirements. Students benefit from access to top-tier facilities, including a clinical skills suite and a state-of-the-art immersive suite. The course is taught by a highly experienced and research-active team who provide dedicated support throughout the programme. With a strong focus on practical experience, students will gain essential clinical skills through placements, which are a key part of the training. For those who already hold a degree and wish to transition into mental health nursing, the MSc Nursing (Mental Health) offers an alternative route to qualifying as a nurse. The programme offers a comprehensive and supportive learning environment, preparing students to become skilled mental health nurses capable of addressing the needs of diverse patient populations.
