Overview

The Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (Top-up) programme at Derby provides a strong academic foundation and the professional skills required for successful practice within engineering. The curriculum integrates key engineering technologies and their applications throughout the programme, ensuring a broad and applied learning experience. Students benefit from access to excellent laboratory facilities, including an Additive Manufacturing Lab featuring a range of 3D printing technologies, a wind tunnel and thermodynamics area, advanced composite manufacturing facilities, and a fully equipped mechanical workshop with both traditional lathes and milling machines alongside modern CNC equipment. The programme develops essential employability skills, including practical engineering competence, problem-solving ability, awareness of current and emerging engineering and strategic challenges, and transferable skills such as presentation techniques, teamwork, and technical and management writing. Teaching is delivered by an expert academic team with extensive industrial engineering experience. The degree is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Graduates who have progressed to the programme through a Partial Incorporated Engineer (Partial IEng)–accredited HND or Foundation Degree route meet the full academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) upon successful completion. Candidates whose prior qualifications are not accredited are not automatically eligible for IEng registration through the programme’s accreditation but may make an individual application to professional regulatory bodies, including IMechE, in accordance with their academic requirements. Engineering roles across modern industries are technologically demanding and characterised by rapid advancement and continual development, often within a global operational environment. Professionals must respond effectively to ongoing demands for innovation and improvement while maintaining adaptability to evolving industry standards. Consequently, the programme places strong emphasis on developing management and leadership capabilities alongside technical expertise as a core element of professional preparation. On completion of the programme, graduates are equipped to analyse, synthesise, and evaluate engineering factors to produce effective and responsible solutions. The curriculum supports the development of comprehensive engineering knowledge and specialist understanding, the application of appropriate theoretical and practical methods, and the cultivation of technical, commercial, and managerial leadership at all professional levels. Strong interpersonal and communication skills across diverse media platforms are emphasised, together with a commitment to professional standards and an awareness of social and environmental responsibilities in accordance with current industry benchmarks.
