The programme provides an in-depth understanding of the theories, factors, and contexts that underpin SEND, while offering students the opportunity to learn from experts across education, health, psychology, and social work, gaining practical insights into professional practice. The University of Derby has a strong track record for employability, with 96% of graduates in work or further study within six months of completing a full-time degree. Students who meet the entry requirements for the PGCE Primary programme are guaranteed an interview. The course prepares learners for a broad range of roles supporting children and adults with diverse learning needs, including specific learning difficulties, physical disabilities, behavioural challenges, and sensory impairments, ensuring that graduates develop the skills and knowledge required to make a positive and lasting impact. The BA (Hons) Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) programme at the University of Derby equips students with specialist knowledge to pursue a rewarding career in SEND support. The course provides an in-depth understanding of all aspects of SEND, encouraging students to engage in discussions and debates while drawing on the latest research to challenge ideas and stimulate critical thinking. Learners also explore the possible psychological, sociological, philosophical, and biological causes of SEND. The programme emphasises the importance of multi-agency collaboration in effective SEND support, highlighting the roles of carers, social workers, special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs), and therapists. Students examine how such collaboration positively impacts individuals and prepares them for professional practice in a team-based environment. The course is delivered by a dedicated and enthusiastic team of experts in education, health, psychology, and social work, who share practical insights and provide fresh perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in SEND. The University of Derby is recognised as a growing centre of excellence in SEND and inclusive practices, ensuring the programme is underpinned by current theories and innovative research. Lecturers regularly publish their work and contribute to studies on topics such as managing the inclusion of SEND pupils in classrooms. Students benefit from a vibrant and supportive learning environment, with approachable tutors and first-rate facilities in the Kirtley Building, including collaborative learning spaces and a large hall for practical activities and observing learning in action. Optional modules allow learners to tailor their studies to personal interests and career goals, covering themes such as autism in children and adults, attention disorders, social, emotional and behavioural development, and communication, speech, and language diversity. Graduates who meet the entry requirements for the PGCE Primary programme are guaranteed an interview during their final undergraduate year, subject to availability. While places on the PGCE Primary are limited and highly sought after, eligible students who satisfy requirements such as GCSE grades, degree classification, experience, and Skills Tests completion are assured an interview. It should be noted, however, that an interview does not guarantee an offer of a place on the course.
