Overview

The Nursing (Adult) and Leadership programme at Derby offers a unique opportunity for students to combine core nursing skills with leadership development, preparing them for a transformative career in healthcare. This course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and aligns with the Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses. Upon completion, students are eligible to apply for registration with the NMC, enabling them to practice as qualified adult nurses in a variety of healthcare settings. The course provides hands-on experience with placements across diverse healthcare and community environments, ensuring students gain vital practical experience in real-world settings. Clinical placements are complemented by state-of-the-art facilities, including clinical skills suites and immersive simulation suites, allowing students to hone their skills in a supportive and realistic environment. This access to first-class facilities is matched by a team of experienced and passionate lecturers, who are committed to providing full support throughout the course to help students achieve their ambitions. The four-year full-time programme is designed for students who do not have a prior degree, offering a Master’s level award alongside NMC registration. Over the course, students will engage in classroom learning, skills labs, and online modules, developing a strong foundation in nursing practice. As students progress, they will also focus on leadership development in the fourth year, equipping them with the skills to take on managerial roles and support career progression in nursing leadership. This course combines compassionate care with leadership training, ensuring students are emotionally resilient and ready to face the challenges of nursing. With a focus on diverse patient care, the course provides a deep understanding of the needs of patients with acute, chronic, and long-term conditions. Students will also experience a broad range of placement opportunities, with a mandatory 50% of the course dedicated to practice-based learning. This enables students to gain essential experience working directly with patients while benefiting from the mentorship of Practice Assessors and Practice Supervisors. Derby’s nursing programmes are mapped to NMC standards and are continually updated to reflect national changes in healthcare and policy. This ensures that students receive an education that is current, relevant, and aligned with the latest developments in the profession. The Derby campus offers excellent facilities, including replica wards, counselling rooms, and treatment rooms that are fully equipped with the latest resources. The course also emphasizes multi-professional learning, giving students the chance to collaborate with peers from other disciplines, preparing them for the collaborative nature of modern healthcare practice. By the end of the programme, students will have developed the leadership, clinical, and professional skills necessary to excel as adult nurses and leaders in healthcare, ready to contribute to high-quality patient care and healthcare management in diverse settings.
