Overview

The Nursing (Mental Health) and Leadership degree at Derby is designed to prepare students for a rewarding career in mental health nursing, while also providing them with the leadership skills essential for career progression. This comprehensive course is approved according to the NMC’s Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses, and upon successful completion, graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in their chosen field of practice. Throughout the programme, students will gain valuable practical experience through placements in a range of healthcare and community settings, allowing them to apply the knowledge and skills they develop in real-world environments. These placements are supported by the university's state-of-the-art facilities, including the clinical skills suite and immersive suite, ensuring students are well-equipped for the challenges of modern nursing practice. The course is structured as a four-year full-time programme, which is ideal for applicants who do not have a prior degree. By the end of the course, students will have achieved a Masters level award alongside NMC registration in mental health nursing. Students will complete a range of modules that focus on developing the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for safe, effective nursing practice, ensuring that the interests of people requiring nursing care are always put first. In addition to the core nursing content, students will also gain a deep understanding of mental health nursing, developing leadership skills in their final year to support future career progression. This dual focus on clinical practice and leadership development ensures that graduates are equipped to take on senior roles within the healthcare system. Learning is facilitated through a blend of classroom-based activities, skills laboratories, and digital learning tools, offering students a well-rounded education that combines theory, practical experience, and leadership training. The programme is taught by a team of highly experienced, enthusiastic, and research-active professionals who are dedicated to supporting students throughout their studies. For those eligible, the NHS Learning Support Fund may offer financial assistance for training, childcare, and travel to placements. This course prepares students to become emotionally resilient, transformational Registered Nurses who can lead in their field, work with diverse patient groups, and provide high-quality care across a range of mental health conditions. With the added focus on leadership, graduates are also well-equipped to take on roles that influence and shape the future of mental health nursing practice.
