Overview

The PhD Psychology at the University of Buckingham is a research degree offered through the School of Psychology. The programme provides students with the opportunity to undertake an original and substantial research project in psychology, supported by a collaborative and multidisciplinary research environment. Research proposals are considered across a broad range of topics aligned with staff expertise, including social and cognitive experiences, creativity and performance, and self and identity. Students can study full-time or part-time, with a minimum study period of three years full-time or six years part-time. Research may use a range of quantitative and qualitative methods and can explore topics such as human-robot interaction, attention and time perception, problem solving and expertise, creativity and performance, sport and dance, cyberpsychology and artificial intelligence, religion, gender, health, injury and identity. Students work under supervision while developing the research skills needed to evaluate evidence critically and conduct independent research. The programme includes opportunities to participate in work-in-progress seminars, postgraduate research activities, an annual postgraduate conference and wider academic conferences. The programme leads to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualification. Assessment is based primarily on the completion and examination of a doctoral thesis demonstrating an in-depth understanding of the chosen research area and an original contribution to knowledge. Applicants are normally expected to hold at least a 2:1 degree in Psychology or a related discipline. An MSc in Psychology or a closely related subject is desirable but not essential; applicants without an MSc should have a very good undergraduate degree and demonstrate a solid understanding of psychological research methods and statistics.

About the Institution

The University of Buckingham is the only independent university in the UK with a Royal Charter, and probably the smallest with around 2,700 students. Honours degrees are achieved in two intensive years of study. We keep class sizes small, with a student:academic staff ratio of 10.4:1 and the Oxbridge style tutorial groups are often personalised and always exhilarating. The real basis of the University of Buckingham’s success has been its staff and, above all, students. Those who will graduate this year follow in a distinguished line and they and their successors will carry the reputation of th...
