Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Art Education in the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art offers a core curriculum of theory and practice designed to prepare students for careers as licensed visual arts instructors in a variety of settings, including P–12 schools, museums, and community arts organizations. The program equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and competencies expected of those holding a liberal arts baccalaureate degree in art alongside professional preparation in art education. Licensed P–12 art teachers completing this program are expected to demonstrate high-level skills as artists, designers, and educators. Students benefit from comprehensive instruction in art, history, and theory, access to professionally equipped art and technology studios, and licensure through the College of Education via academically rigorous and interactive coursework. The program emphasizes development of expressive, technical, procedural, and organizational skills through studio art and design experiences, as well as an understanding of major styles and periods of art history, analytical methods, and critical theories. Graduates are trained to connect educational processes and structures with knowledge across the arts, sciences, and humanities, enabling effective application of art competencies in teaching and integration of art and design instruction into broader educational contexts. The program also focuses on developing the ability to customize and differentiate learning for students with diverse needs, design curricular and instructional strategies, build 21st-century cross-disciplinary skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and technological proficiency, and employ effective assessment strategies to improve instruction and support student success.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
