Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Child and Family Development prepares students for careers in areas such as parent and family education, child welfare, early childhood education, case management, home-based intervention, child life, and child/family advocacy. The curriculum blends theoretical foundations with practical application, allowing students to select coursework that aligns with their interests. Every student completes a minor or certificate and participates in an internship relevant to individual career goals, enhancing career readiness. The program includes coursework in human development, family dynamics, health and nutrition, diversity, consumer issues, early childhood programming, and applied skills. Faculty members provide guidance to help students maximize their degree by incorporating minors and certificates, and a capstone experience offers opportunities to work with professionals and apply academic knowledge in real-world settings. Consistent with the mission of The University of Akron and the College of Health and Human Sciences, the undergraduate social work program prepares students for competent and effective generalist practice. The program develops skills to integrate social work knowledge, values, and practices with diverse client systems; identify client strengths to foster empowerment and social justice; and apply theoretically-based research and critical thinking for ethical practice. The social work major is accredited and prepares students for entry-level positions in social service agencies.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
