Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Geology focuses on the study of Earth’s materials, structures, and processes and their changes over time. This knowledge is applied to addressing environmental contamination, investigating Earth’s history to understand the evolution of life and global climate change, understanding natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides, and exploring natural resources, including metals, petroleum, and water. Geologists are employed by environmental consulting firms, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, natural resource companies, and universities. Core courses provide a foundation in physical and historical geology, mineralogy and petrography, structural geology and plate tectonics, and sedimentology, paleontology, and stratigraphy. The degree program can be tailored to a specific field of interest through additional coursework in supporting sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Geosciences students develop skills necessary for understanding the Earth system through field and laboratory experiences, with an emphasis on hands-on learning, preparing graduates for careers in Earth resources, environmental consulting, government, and other related fields.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
