Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science explores society’s relationship with the physical and biological world. This knowledge is applied to understanding natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides; addressing environmental contamination; and investigating Earth’s history to understand global climate change. Environmental scientists are employed by environmental consulting firms, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and universities. Core courses provide fundamentals in physical geology, biology, and chemistry, while the degree program can be tailored to a specific field of interest through additional coursework in supporting sciences and mathematics. Geosciences students develop skills necessary for understanding the Earth system through a variety of field and laboratory experiences, with hands-on learning emphasized throughout the curriculum. Graduates may pursue careers in Earth resources, environmental consulting, government, or other related fields.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
