Overview

The study of music at the University of Akron provides a comprehensive foundation for careers in performance, music education, technology, and other related areas. The curriculum combines traditional classroom instruction, individualized study, and practical experiences, supported by highly accomplished faculty, including principal players in professional orchestras, composers, and theorists. Students gain hands-on experience through access to music studios, a computer lab, an electronic music studio, practice modules, the 250-seat Guzzetta Recital Hall, and the 3,000-seat E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. Performance skills are further developed through participation in a wide range of ensembles, including the Symphony Orchestra, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, University Orchestras, Steel Drum Band, UA Marching Band, Akron New Music Ensemble, jazz ensembles and combos, brass, woodwind, and guitar ensembles, string trios and quartets, and percussion ensembles. Students can also engage with peers and professionals through organizations such as the Ohio Collegiate Music Educators Association, Northeastern Ohio Clarinet Association, Northeastern Ohio Flute Association, American Choral Directors Association, and International Trumpet Guild. A degree in music prepares graduates for diverse career opportunities, including instrumentalists, singers, music directors, composers and arrangers, music production, business and communications, law, and music education.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
