Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at The University of Akron provides a comprehensive academic and clinical foundation in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology. The undergraduate curriculum emphasizes the fundamental components of the discipline, including normal communication development and processes, the scientific principles of speech and hearing, and an introduction to the evaluation and treatment of hearing, speech, language, and communication disorders. Completion of the undergraduate degree prepares graduates for entry into graduate study in either speech-language pathology or audiology. Speech-language pathologists specialize in diagnosing and treating communication and swallowing disabilities across the lifespan, from infants to the elderly. They address speech, language, fluency, swallowing, voice, and cognitive-communication disorders arising from conditions such as hearing loss, brain injury, or stroke, and prescribe assistive technology for communication, reading, and writing. The undergraduate program provides a broad understanding of normal speech, hearing, and language development, along with an introduction to the assessment and management of communication disorders. Graduates may also pursue roles in health-related businesses, such as sales or case management. To practice as a speech-language pathologist, students must complete a master’s degree, which typically takes two years and includes both classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience. Clinical preparation encompasses on-campus clinics as well as community-based externships in hospitals, schools, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, clinics, and private practice settings.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
