Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jewelry and Metalsmithing introduces students to a variety of techniques and processes specific to the field, enabling exploration of a wide range of ideas, objects, images, and modes of making. The curriculum integrates art theory, craft history, contemporary issues, and personal influences with practical approaches to materials and production. Students refine their skills through the creation of both utilitarian and nonfunctional objects, jewelry, and metal sculpture. The program provides a comprehensive undergraduate education that prepares students for graduate-level study, professional life as visual artists, and careers in the jewelry production and manufacturing industry. Students gain experience with traditional jewelry and metalsmithing practices, including silversmithing, hollow form construction, casting, enameling, electroforming, stone setting, and die forming, as well as alternative processes such as 3D modeling and printing, laser cutting, powder coating, electroplating, vacuum forming, resin work, and experimentation with other materials. The program emphasizes conceptual thinking, innovation in design, refined craftsmanship, and critical and analytical evaluation of art. Students develop creative problem-solving skills, self-motivated studio practice, and a strong work ethic, while becoming familiar with contemporary art and craft aesthetics and safe studio practices. Unique opportunities beyond traditional classroom learning further support the development of professional and lifelong learning skills.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
