Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography provides students with in-depth experience in black and white and color fine art photography, utilizing both film and digital technologies, as well as commercial photography and alternative approaches to the medium. The program emphasizes technical mastery and advanced conceptual thinking, while providing a solid grounding in historical and contemporary issues in photography. Its primary aim is to deliver a high-quality professional undergraduate education in fine art photography, focusing on mastery of film and digital technologies and strong conceptual development culminating in a final portfolio and exhibition. The curriculum also serves students from other art and non-art disciplines who elect photography courses. Students gain an understanding of historical and conceptual developments in photography, proficiency with tools, materials, and processes used in the field today, and preparation for careers as professional artists in gallery and museum contexts. The program supports personal development, fostering self-awareness and avenues for self-expression. While pursuing the BFA, students benefit from a broad range of facilities and opportunities, including competitive scholarships for tuition, fees, materials, research, and travel, travel to regional and national conferences of the Society for Photographic Education, after-hours access to darkrooms, lighting, and digital labs, exhibition opportunities on campus and in the region, hands-on experiences with visiting artists-in-residence programs, and participation in student-led activities through the Folk Photography Association.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
