Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking focuses on a dynamic investigation into the meaning of printed matter and the production of multiples in contemporary society. Students explore the visual and expressive potential of fine art printmaking while developing a theoretical grounding in both the historic context and contemporary applications of the discipline. The curriculum provides a strong technical and conceptual foundation in print media, emphasizing problem-solving and analytical skills. Through independent and collaborative work, students refine artistic abilities, discover individual creative voices, and cultivate habits essential to the lives of professional artists and engaged global citizens. The purpose of the Printmaking program is to deliver a comprehensive, forward-thinking undergraduate education that prepares students for professional work as visual artists, careers in printing and printmaking, and graduate-level study in printmaking and the visual arts. The program offers instruction in a wide range of printmaking techniques—from historic to progressive—while supporting and enhancing the educational experiences of students in other areas within The Myers School of Art. The program develops technical proficiency in primary printmaking media, including relief, intaglio, lithography, and screenprinting, as well as progressive contemporary practices such as digital printing, print installation, and relational aesthetics. It fosters problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and idea development relevant to printmaking and broader art-making practices, encourages the application of printmaking concepts, skills, and methodologies to other fields of study and personal artistic exploration, and promotes collaborative work in communal spaces with an emphasis on social responsibility. Additionally, the program provides contextual knowledge of contemporary and historical printmaking, cultivates the ability to critically analyze artworks created through printmaking processes, and offers unique opportunities beyond traditional classroom instruction to expand learning and encourage lifelong engagement with the arts.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
