Overview

Chemistry is an experimental science that seeks to understand the structure and function of molecules. Chemists synthesize new materials, and study their properties and how they interact with other compounds. The BS degree offered by the department prepares students for independent laboratory work and research. The Department of Chemistry offers five undergraduate degree programs as well as a minor in chemistry. The Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Chemistry with a Polymer option provide a greater concentration in chemistry and are accredited by the American Chemical Society. The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry bridges the disciplines of chemistry and biology and adheres to the standards established by the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The Bachelor of Arts degree allows sufficient flexibility for students to complete a minor in another subject, with commonly selected options including biology, business, or a foreign language. Undergraduate research is strongly encouraged, and students have multiple opportunities to gain hands-on experience in chemistry. Independent research may be completed by enrolling in Chem 499, or Chem 497 for Honors students, which involves conducting research under the guidance of a faculty member. Descriptions of faculty research areas are available through the University of Akron website and the ACS Directory of Graduate Research. Practical experience may also be gained through Chem 399, which provides internship opportunities in industrial, hospital, or other off-campus laboratory settings. Academic advisors provide guidance regarding Chem 497 and Chem 499, while Chem 399 is coordinated by Professor Tessier.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
