Overview

The Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program is a highly interdisciplinary field that integrates engineering principles with a strong foundation in mathematics, physical sciences, and biological sciences. Biomedical engineers are trained to design, manage, and regulate medical devices and technologies while working closely with healthcare professionals and engineers from other disciplines. Graduates are prepared for careers in medical device and technology companies, engineering firms, research environments, and professional health sciences fields. The modern undergraduate curriculum emphasizes the application of engineering, mathematical, physical, and life science principles to solve challenges in healthcare and related industries. Students integrate foundational classroom knowledge through hands-on laboratory experiences and a design-centered curriculum. The program includes instruction in the FDA design process for the development, management, and regulation of medical devices and technologies, culminating in a senior design capstone project that addresses a real-world medical need. Opportunities are also available to engage with biomedical engineering beyond the classroom through participation in professional student organizations, design teams, and paid undergraduate research in faculty laboratories. Program highlights include a curriculum focused on the design of medical devices and technologies, reinforced by hands-on laboratory experiences using industry-standard tools. Coursework may be tailored to specific academic and career interests such as prosthetics and implantable device design or cancer research. Many students participate in cooperative education programs that provide paid, flexible industry experience, with participants earning an average of $43,200 over three co-op rotations during their studies. Multiple undergraduate research opportunities are available to further develop technical and collaborative skills outside the classroom. Students work alongside faculty and graduate researchers on federally funded projects in areas including tissue engineering, biomaterials, biomechanics, biofabrication, artificial intelligence, and clinical and translational science. These experiences also provide opportunities to present research findings to faculty, industry representatives, and at local, regional, and national conferences.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
