Overview

Computer engineering focuses on the design and development of hardware and software systems, including software applications, communication networks, embedded sensors, computer security, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The field integrates both theoretical and applied approaches to address complex computing challenges across a wide range of industries. At The University of Akron, students enrolled in the Computer Engineering program develop a strong foundation in programming, operating systems, and computer systems, comparable to that of computer science students, while also gaining extensive knowledge of circuits, electronics, and analog and digital hardware alongside electrical engineering students. This interdisciplinary approach provides a comprehensive understanding of how hardware and software interact within modern computing systems and offers a distinctive perspective on system-level design. The discipline of computer engineering encompasses areas such as operating systems, embedded systems design, digital circuits, algorithms, software design, and computer architecture. These areas support important applications including wired and wireless networks, simulation, automation, digital control systems, sensing technologies, robotics, and applications involving data management. Graduates of the University of Akron with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering have secured positions with organizations such as Burns & McDonnell, John Deere, Diebold Nixdorf, LTA Research and Exploration, Rockwell Automation, Sanctuary Software Studios, and The RoviSys Company, among others. A degree in computer engineering prepares graduates to design and develop software for embedded and networked systems, address complex technical problems, and design, develop, and test computer chips, circuit boards, computer systems, and related computing equipment.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
