Overview

The Computer Information Systems (CIS) program at The University of Akron provides advanced education and training designed to prepare future information technology professionals. Instruction takes place in modern, cutting-edge computer laboratories, allowing students to gain practical experience while developing specialized technical expertise. The CIS curriculum offers multiple pathways for focused study to meet the diverse needs of the technology industry. The Cybersecurity option, the first of its kind among public universities in Ohio, integrates instruction in computer architecture, programming, networking, cryptography, and related areas. This option prepares graduates to apply security principles and practices to assess, manage, and mitigate technological risks and threats. The program emphasizes real-world experience through hands-on learning in advanced computer and network technology laboratories. Exposure to a wide range of hardware and software platforms allows students to develop familiarity with diverse systems and applications. Optional cooperative education opportunities further enhance professional preparation by enabling students to alternate academic study with paid work experience in the information technology field. Graduates of the Computer Information Systems program have secured employment with organizations such as Cisco Systems, The J.M. Smucker Company, FirstEnergy Corporation, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Lubrizol, GOJO Industries, the Veterans Administration Hospital, and Diebold Nixdorf. A degree in Computer Information Systems supports career pathways in a variety of technology-focused roles, including programmer trainee, programmer or analyst, software developer, computer operator, network specialist in business, industry, or government, and cybersecurity professional responsible for protecting data, systems, and networks from evolving threats.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
