Overview

The Computer Science program at The University of Akron offers a comprehensive academic pathway designed to prepare graduates for careers in a rapidly expanding technological field. An accelerated degree option allows qualified students to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree within five years, offering significant cost savings. Since establishing its first Computer Center in 1957, the university has maintained a long-standing tradition of innovation and excellence in computing education, preparing students for careers across business, education, industry, and government sectors. The curriculum emphasizes professional preparation through the development of strong problem-solving skills using modern software and computer systems. Students build core competencies in object-oriented programming, data structures and algorithms, computer systems software design and engineering, and operating systems. An optional concentration in computer networking equips students with the knowledge and technical skills needed to design, maintain, and secure organizational networks. Graduates of the program pursue diverse career paths, including roles such as program developer, information technology manager, web developer, and application developer. Alumni with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science have secured employment with organizations such as Cisco Systems, Diebold Nixdorf, FirstEnergy, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Hyland, Intel, Progressive Insurance Company, Sherwin-Williams, Cleveland Cliffs, CTI, Rockwell Automation, RoviSys, Schaeffler, and The J.M. Smucker Company. The department offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Computer Science, along with certificates in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and Computer Science, as well as a minor in Computer Science. The accelerated B.S./M.S. option enables students to complete both degrees within five years, excluding cooperative education participation. Hands-on research and experiential learning are central components of the program. Students engage with computer science through access to two computer laboratories equipped with dual-boot workstations, a cluster computer for classroom instruction and research, and resources provided by the Ohio Supercomputer Center. Optional cooperative education opportunities allow students to gain real-world professional experience by alternating semesters of academic study with paid employment in computer science–related fields. A degree in computer science provides extensive career flexibility for professionals with strong technical expertise and communication skills. Possible career outcomes for graduates include positions such as systems analyst, computer scientist, data administrator, systems integrator, artificial intelligence specialist, technical writer, information designer, and roles in sales, service, and management.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
