Overview

The Criminal Intelligence Analysis program at The University of Akron is the only program offered by a state institution in Ohio dedicated to training aspiring criminal intelligence analysts. The curriculum emphasizes analytical and technical coursework, providing students with a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and applied skills required for employment in contemporary criminal justice agencies. Criminal intelligence analysis majors complete a broad interdisciplinary core that includes coursework in sociology, political science, criminal justice technology, geography and planning, geographic and land information systems, and computer information systems. This comprehensive academic foundation supports advanced analytical training and prepares graduates to address complex intelligence and security challenges. Faculty members are experienced professionals in their respective fields and utilize innovative, interactive teaching approaches. Instruction incorporates current industry-standard technologies to enhance classroom learning and align academic training with professional practice. The program places a strong emphasis on experiential learning, guiding students from theory to application through criminal intelligence analysis and forensic laboratories, urban learning labs utilizing downtown Akron for field observation, and professional laboratory experiences that include the completion of at least one required internship. The university’s location provides convenient access to a high concentration of criminal justice agencies, creating opportunities for professional experience, internships, and employment during the course of study. Graduates are specifically trained for crime and intelligence analysis roles within policing and homeland security agencies at the local, state, and federal levels. In addition, graduates are well prepared for employment in private-sector organizations focused on intelligence and operations analysis, as well as for admission to law school or graduate programs.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
