Overview

Economics is the study of how society, businesses, organizations, and individuals produce, exchange, buy, and sell goods and services. A Bachelor of Arts in Economics at The University of Akron prepares students for careers in the field through a strong foundation in economic theory, quantitative analysis, and computer-based methods. The program emphasizes the development of analytical and problem-solving skills and allows students to tailor their studies through electives aligned with specific career pathways, including business, banking and international economics, public policy, and preparation for graduate study. The faculty in the Department of Economics are actively engaged in research, publish in high-quality academic journals, and consult with businesses and government agencies. The program provides significant hands-on learning opportunities, culminating in a senior project in which students demonstrate their analytical and quantitative abilities by applying concepts learned throughout the curriculum. Students also gain real-world professional experience through internship opportunities, typically completed during the summer between the third and fourth years of study. Graduates of the program have secured positions with organizations such as Westfield Insurance, Allstate Insurance, the City of Akron, FirstMerit Bank, Limited Brands, Inc., The Timken Company, SS&G Wealth Management, and PNC Bank. Students are encouraged to engage with peers and professionals through economics-focused organizations, including the Economics Club and the Economics Honor Society, Omicron Delta Epsilon. An economics degree equips graduates with a versatile skill set centered on analytical reasoning and problem-solving, which is highly valued in both the private and public sectors. This flexibility supports a wide range of career opportunities in areas such as academia, business, consulting, government, journalism, and pre-law fields. The department supports career-oriented preparation by offering elective concentrations in business, banking and international economics, public policy, and graduate school preparation. Graduates with a bachelor’s degree in economics pursue positions in economic and market research firms, banks, management consulting firms, securities and commodities organizations, computer and data processing companies, government agencies, insurance companies, and consulting organizations.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
