Overview

The University of Akron’s Bachelor of Science in Surveying and Mapping prepares graduates for technical and professional careers in surveying. Students gain expertise in managing geospatial data using technologies such as laser scanning, drones, precise satellite positioning, ground-penetrating radar, and robotics. Instruction is provided by faculty who are professional surveyors and expert practitioners, emphasizing the application of mathematics, law, and map design to resolve complex boundary evidence challenges. Approximately 97% of engineering students gain hands-on experience through the university’s cooperative education program, one of the oldest in the country, which offers paid, flexible industry experience. The program also fulfills the academic requirements for professional surveyor licensure in Ohio and nearly all other U.S. states. University design teams are nationally and internationally recognized, with a surveying and mapping team winning first place in the 18th Annual Student Competition hosted by the National Society of Professional Surveyors in 2019. Surveyors collect and verify field data, map features and contours for land development and roadway projects, and interpret engineering design plans to accurately place line and grade stakes for construction. Graduates of the B.S. Surveying and Mapping program are in high demand, securing positions with surveying and engineering consulting firms, federal, state, and local government agencies, construction companies, and energy and public utilities organizations.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Verify before applying

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
