Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering Technology combines classroom instruction, laboratory work, and industry experiences to prepare graduates for careers in construction. Graduates collaborate with owners and architects to transform conceptual ideas into functioning systems. Typical positions include construction supervision, construction testing, construction inspection, and construction scheduling and estimating for both public and private companies. The program features a cooperative education component, which provides paid, flexible industry experience and is a required element of the Construction Engineering Technology curriculum. Students gain exposure to the latest construction technologies, including building information modeling (BIM), advanced construction materials, eco-friendly construction practices, and 3-D printed structures. Faculty members are experienced professionals, including licensed engineers and expert practitioners in the field. Opportunities to participate in nationally recognized design teams allow students to apply knowledge outside the classroom, collaborate with peers, travel, and build professional credentials. Professionals in construction engineering technology apply expertise in construction methods, business operations, and management skills to support a variety of projects, including residential and commercial buildings, bridges, roads, dams, and wastewater treatment systems. Recent graduates from the University of Akron’s program have secured positions with organizations such as the Ohio Department of Transportation, Great Lakes Construction, and Environmental Design Group.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
