Overview

The exercise science major is designed to prepare students for employment in commercial, corporate, clinical, community and government agencies with interest in the areas of physical activity and health promotion. The program prepares students to sit for certification examinations such as American College of Sports Medicine Exercise Physiologist Certified and the National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Students choosing this pre-professional concentration can obtain the necessary pre-requisite courses for graduate programs including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Athletic Training, Doctor of Chiropractic, medical school and many other health profession advanced degrees. The exercise science program prepares students through the study of human movement for careers in health and fitness, personal training, strength and conditioning, cardiac rehabilitation, and professional graduate programs. This bachelor’s degree program allows a focused course of study through the selection of an area of concentration. Careers in this allied health field prepare graduates for a variety of roles in wellness programming, coaching, and personal training. The program also serves as a strong foundation for other allied health professions and is designed to meet the requirements of graduate programs for those pursuing advanced education. Graduates of exercise science programs are employed in roles such as cardiopulmonary rehabilitation specialists, employee fitness directors, exercise physiologists, occupational physiologists, personal trainers, physical and occupational therapists, chiropractors, physicians, researchers, group exercise instructors, and biomechanists. A bachelor’s degree in exercise science provides preparation for diverse career opportunities within the fitness and health industries, including exercise testing, exercise prescription for both healthy individuals and those with special considerations, strength and conditioning, and the use of exercise for weight management. Specialization options are available through concentrations in Applied Exercise Physiology and Pre-Physical Therapy.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
